This is the second time my wife and I have eaten at the Sardine Factory in the last few years and it does not disappoint. While it is in the middle of the tourist-heavy area of Cannery Row and the aquarium, and doesn't look like much from the outside, it is like stepping back in time (in a good way) passing through the front door. An elegant interior and a cozy, old world charm define the bar and dining room. It's very pleasant and inviting for an upscale or romantic experience. The food was fantastic all the way around. We started with a round of cocktails, including one of the specialty drinks, a strawberry lemon drop, for my wife. She loved the freshness of the strawberries in the drink. We followed drinks with some appetizers and the chowder all of which were excellent. To be honest, by the time we were done with appetizers we were full. Very generous portions and hard not to finish. For entrees, I had the filet and my wife had the lobster tail; a strategic choice so we could share and both enjoy some surf and turf. Both were good excellent. It was a bit odd that the lobster wasn't served with drawn butter, but it was tasty just the same. Perhaps the most pleasantly surprising part of the evening was the very robust conversations we had with two different sommeliers. With a large wine list we appreciated the help in navigating it. We want to try something new. We explained what we liked, and why, and gave them a price point that we wanted. Both clearly had a deep knowledge of their list and absolutely nailed what we were looking for. I never felt like they were trying to sell me something. It was a great experience with both of them. The only slight disappointment came at the end of the evening when we were enjoying our coffee and digestifs: they were out of tiramisu. Ultimately I think we were both relived because we were already so full neither of us really wanted dessert. It was more like we were playing a game of dessert chicken with one another at that point. While it is not inexpensive to eat that kind of meal at the Sardine Factory, there is more than enough value in the food and experience to justify splurging. I highly recommend trying it.
