The first time, maybe 3 years ago? was with the boyfriend's (now husband) school friend, during the week, for a pint. I thought we were going just down the lane but it felt like through a valley, into the woods, across a dale, on a dark, dark (also one way) road. I fell in love with the building, old of course, but with new additions. Sat next to the warm fireplace and had a pleasant conversation but also listened in on others. Love the old men who brought their dogs and kept their hats on. The next time it was just us and the food! Oh, the dreamy, local, gourmet, yet hearty food. I ask the husband very nicely to make sure it is on our list of places to visit and we go every time. The menu is seasonal but you'll always find a nice pasta dish, a wonderful fish dish and some hearty meat plate.I'm very close to saying it's my favorite place to eat in all of England. It is pricey--even without alcohol, it's usually over 20 pounds per person and the service can sometimes be slow (always busy). But I love that I can always order something that I know I can't make or get anywhere else and I love that it's out of the way. My secret place that's not so secret.
