The Walnut Room Chicago Reviews from The Last Year

My mom and I had lunch here on a Thursday in May, and I was surprised at two things: how quiet it was, and how reasonable the prices were! We both had the traditional pot pie which comes with a small walnut room salad. I had a french 75 cocktail to celebrate finally getting to eat at the famous Walnut Rooom, and mom had a mango Agua Fresca, which was delicious and part of the Cinco de mayo specials. We were both happy with our meals, the service was great and the ambiance was classic! I recommend checking it out, and I'll definitely be back!

I went to the walnut room in November when they had their famous Christmas decorations up. It was a cute vibe and fun to see the big Christmas tree. The food was decent, I got a burger. It seemed a bit outdated and not the best ambiance.
Overall experience was just ok.
It's a Chicago staple known for its Christmas decor and that's really what people go for. I've been around Christmas and it doesn't disappoint. The restaurant is gorgeous no matter what time of year you go. However, I can say less about the food. We got the pot pie, which is what they say is their staple dish and it was tasty but very small for the price. The service was unbelievably slow. It took forever to get our drinks and by the time they got to us, they were warm. We debated on a second round because of how long we waited. Regrettably, we did get a second round but by the time those arrived, we were already done with our meal and were ready for the bill. I would recommend this place for the Christmas experience only but wouldn't advise those to come with high expectations. Be sure to make a reservation if you do because they get booked.
This place is awesome! You should make a reservation.
I had the Sunday veggie quiche brunch menu with walnut salad . It melted in your mouth . It's beautiful inside Cloth napkins white tablecloth Beautiful view Nice sites We will be back Thanks for the pleasant day
We had a wonderful brunch - which set us in the holiday
We had a wonderful brunch - which set us in the holiday mood. The service was great and we had a wonderful experience. It is definitely a holiday To Do if you are in Chicago. Also, the souvenir glasses were a nice touch to take home as well.
The ambiance is the only nice thing about this place.
The food and service were very sub-par, including the cost!
What can you say about the Walnut Room around the holidays?
What can you say about the Walnut Room around the holidays? The ambience is spectacular. The food is phenomenal. And the service was beyond impeccable. Our servers took care of of a birthday surprise I had planned with precision. It was a parade of cake. And right beside the restaurant was the Marshall Field archive. Felt like the old days!
Ate at Walnut Room tonight, it was clean and empty.
But the filet steak was the worse I've eaten ever! Walnut Room chef put some kind of gravy mushroom over steak?? A good filet steak does not need drenched in anything. Plus it was a fatty steak? It may have not even been a filet. Mentioned to our waiter and he said he would say something to kitchen. Pretty disappointing!
The sauce is made of pommery mustard with cheese crusted
The sauce is made of pommery mustard with cheese crusted chicken that was so good and savory along with the mashed potatoes and veggies. Came here for lunch with some coworkers which happens to be located In the macys building. Beautiful space and lovely to visit if you've never been.
Lovely historic restaurant.
Great service. Delicious food. If you want reservations for a table near the Walnut Room Christmas tree, you will have to make reservations months ahead.
Walnut Room great experience
Wonderful atmosphere for a very nice and emotional place. Suggested for a great place where you can eat delicious dishes in a very ancient and elegant sensations.
Came here after Hamilton.
Arrived at 4:45p and it was absolutely dead. Our waitress was pleasant and the food was good. Take note this is on the 7th floor above Macy's.
Sad and Tired Christmas Experience
My daughter and I visited for the Christmas festivities. It was strange that it was very difficult to get a table yet the space was less than half filled when we arrived for our reservation time. Also there was just the 2 of us and we were seated at a 6 person table. Food was ok and as expected. It felt as though the event lacked any sort of lead ship and organization. Perhaps this is how it plays out each year. I was not the event that we expected. It was not even close to other special Christmas events that we have visited with our daughter over the years. Perhaps management should visit other cities like New York and toronto to witness other family Christmas events and learn. The staff seemed to have very little Christmas spirit and performed their tasks with very little interest in making the experience fun for everyone. The experience was a little sad.
Pass
I was looking forward to coming back as itโs been a while since I dined here for the holiday, but if I could give zero stars I would as the dining experience was terrible. We had to ask twice for an additional chair as the table they sat us at didnโt hold the entire party that we reserved for. We were sat in the far back left of the seating area next to the kitchen. Whatโs unfortunate about being seated in the back left of the seating area is that they leave all the giant bussing bins along side the wall in plain sight so the only view we had was stacked up dishes that smelled like old ketchup and were spilling over with food. The only thing we could hear was the waitstaff and bussers dropping dishes into the bins every few secondsโit was loud and extremely unpleasant. The tables were so close together in this area that a single person could hardly get through an aisle, let alone a waiter with food and definitely not someone with limited mobility or in a wheelchair. There were 3 open tables further away from the kitchen and bussing bins that would fit our party. We asked the hostess if we could move tables so we could get some reprieve from the old food smell and the loud slamming of dishes every few seconds. The hostess said the kitchen was closed but said sheโd ask the waiter. After 5 minutes and still no one taking our order, the waiter came to our table and we asked them directly. The waiter didnโt even have a chance to respond because the manager who was standing by the bussing bins heard us ask the question and shouted, โNo! Sorry! But no! No one can move to a different table!โ. The aggressiveness of the response left us in shock and was embarrassing โwe should have just left, but we just froze. The group hardly talked after that. It ruined the whole night. After 30 minutes, we were finally able to get a food order in (they were out of pot pie and salmon). They gave us wet cloth napkins and one of our drinks came in a dirty glass that had lip marks, was sticky, and had finger prints all over it. We didnโt ask for a new napkin or drink because we didnโt want to cause any other reason to get shouted at. Like suckers we just put up with it and paid for an undrinkable drink. Aside from the whole shouting incident, the floors were covered in food and trash. I donโt think they sweep up the dining area throughout the day. I bet the kitchen looks the same. Youโll have a better experience holiday experience at a Cracker Barrel. I will never come back again and wish we could get our money back.
Very disappointed
The food was good, the service was very bad and very slow. Waited for the bill over 30 minutes. But the worse thing is asking the manager by the tree to take our photo, me my friend and 2 little boys he replied absolutely not , then he loudly asking us if we have reservation!!!!!!! I told him we just finished eating here. If he works for me I will definitely train him first before he works in public , such a bad image to your company and restaurant!!! I have a visitors and spending our money in a place like that to hear such negative respond!!!! Shame on him very disappointed to say the least.
Best Chicken Pot Pie In The World!
This was our first stop when we got to Chicago. The decorations were beautiful. I had read where they had the best Chicken Pot Pie in the world. Well, they did not lie, it was wonderful. Walnut Room Salad was also very good. We finished the meal with a huge slice of Carrot Cake and coffee. The scenery was beautiful and the meal was too. Make sure to get your reservations on Open Table so you do not make the trip and be disappointed.
Good Food - Great History
The History of the Walnut Room is excellent. The Christmas Season is a special occasion to visit the Walnut Room. The tree is beautifully decorated and the seasonal holiday menu is very nice. The historic Chicken Pot Pie is must to eat.
Beautiful decor, average food!
The decor at the Walnut Room is stunning! However, the queue to get in (despite having a reservation) was huge!! Once in the staff were pleasant enough. I felt the full experience was very rushed. The food came out very fast and was average. I felt I spent more time in the queue than at the table. A nice place to take photos but not sure Iโd return.
This just became a tradition for us!
The food came out really fast and was fresh. We came here primarily so my daughter could see the gigantic Christmas tree in the walnut room and see the fairy princesses. We got all of that and visits from THREE fairy Princess. My daughter was loving it all. We had a chicken pot pie, chicken tenders and Turkey breast dinnerโฆ All were great. They even sent my daughter home with a glass mug to commemorate the dining experience. (Free!)
Very Special Experience
We were so looking forward to this and were not disappointed! It was our first time, and we loved the dinner, the dessert, the souvenir glass, the tree, and everything! We were treated well and made to feel special. I can understand how people might make this an annual tradition. We may even be back ourselves!
Christmas Time at the Walnut Room
The Christmas time here will be a yearly treat; but I recommend you start looking for reservations in September as it was IMPOSSIBLE to get any reservation by the tree in November-December. I was LUCKY to get the first day at 630pm! Overall, it was a fun experience (more or less); the table we had was definitely put in to have an extra table - it was tight and way to close to the table of 5 next to us. Food was great ($$-$$$ side -- but that's to be expected); Changing of the colors of the room: I preferred the orange as it was "natural" and easy to take pics of the food and tree in its natural light; it affected my sight a little; also I think prices are about $2 too much ;) Overall, though I would recoomend this is a Christmas treat!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!

This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldnโt be happier! ๐
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.

LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venueโs rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil

Need to cancel a bid, not getting a responseโฆ how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been โmatchedโ with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
