After TUMBI was recommended by friends, two of us decided to try TUMBI for takeout. We ordered four dishes -- Bhindi Masala, Avocado Bhel Puri, Afghani Seekh Kabob, Butter Chicken -- and a bunch of sides (saffron rice, plain old naan, garlic naan).Pickup was easy: we pulled up in front of the restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd., dashed in to identify ourselves and were handed our stapled-up bag immediately. Parking around here is of course impossible, but there are places to pull over while the driver stays with the car and a passenger dashes in.The menu at TUMBI is fairly short, but all of the dishes struck us as interesting and somewhat non-standard. We loved everything that came home in our bag. I'm a big fan of bhindi and thought that it was especially delicious. We might have under-ordered a tiny bit; next time, we should add a side or two.

Best food we've tried in a while and can't wait to be back. Service was phenomenal as well.
Be the first to ReplyIn short, the value isn't there for the Indian food.
You can get similar quality much cheaper from a small shop. For the same price you can get much better food elsewhere (e.g. Cobi's, Badmaash, etc.)

Be the first to ReplyGreat food.
I love to eat here whenever I visit town (note: they have Butter Paneer off menu!) Staff doesn't necessarily go out of their way to provide Michelin-like hospitality and service, but after 5-6 visits, they definitely warm up on you. Or maybe vice-versa.Pro-Tip: Order 1-2 naans (I prefer cheese, then garlic naan) for your table as you eat instead of a basket up front so they don't get cold... they'll make you fresh naan within a minute's notice! Also, I think only Rita's down the street does this to cater to non-Indian eaters, but make sure you definitely do not add sugar to any of the savory dishes! Enjoy the spices (not necessarily heat) and start with Mi

Delicious food and great service! Everything we got was amazing! Already planning to return!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic food - subpar service.
The Palak paneer and golgappa was fantastic - among the best I've had. Service was super late - they didn't give water or utensils until 15 minutes into the stay. Ambiance was nice, although seating was a bit uncomfortable. The presentation of the pani puri was incredible - the masala liquid was in shot glasses which we poured into the shells, and upon biting into it, it was an absolute burst of flavor. The Palak paneer was creamy and absolutely delicious.

The butter chicken is incredible. The team is super nice and it's easy to get a table. A+

This is relatively new restaurant. I went in to look at menu. I ordered cup of Chai. I had to ask 3 people for it. And place was empty. Finally got it. Was weak tea. Cost $5.51. I gave the server $6.00 after 10 mins I asked for my change. The server said they didn't have change. Now if I was owner or even a server I would have given me a dollar back. Instead the server took it upon himself and ignore me and decide not to give me change. I love Indian food. But for trying to cheat me out of 49c this place will never see a nickel of my money. I miss the days when customers were valued. If they keep up this level of customer service they won't be around long. And that's fine with me.

The appetizers, entrees and desserts are all amazing. Highly recommend the butter chicken, vada pav, and carrot halwa. The Pani Puri shots were fun as well. We had to wait on 2 people in our party for quite a while but the servers were really patient with us. Location is just a block from the beach which made for a nice walk afterwards. Will be coming back soon.

One of my favorite restaurants in Santa Monica and one that is a regular in my rotation. I've taken many friends here and they all love it. My go to order is the butter chicken, but the prawn masala and rogan josh are excellent choices as well. Hospitable staff and great location. My only complaint is that I wish they were open for lunch.

Celiacs or those with a gluten allergy, beware - the person who answered my call just now told me they add flour to the dosa, making it NOT gluten free even though the menu says otherwise.

A great Indian restaurant located in front of the Santa Monica beach. The menu is simple yet offers all of the classic dishes as well as authentic street foods.-----Papadum & Chutney's: lentil chips, house chutneys ($7).The lentil chips were crispy with a hint of saltiness. All three of the chutneys were good; I liked the sweet and tangy dark tamarind one the most.-----Charbroiled Paneer Tikka: Indian cottage cheese, yogurt, kalonji, curry leaf marinade, mint chutney ($13).-----Channa Bhatura: garbanzo beans, garlic oil, roasted garam spices, puff wok fried bread ($17).-----Fungi Mushroom Dosa: farmers' market mushroom, curry leaf ($16).The dosa is a huge portion that is enough for two people. It is filled with a ton of slices mushrooms, definitely at least a pound's worth. The texture of the dosa was soft, chewy, and slightly crispy on the edges. I liked the three sauces, which helped offset and switch up the heavy mushroom profile.-----Lighting indoor is rather dim. We sat outdoors and got to watch the skies glow red from the sunset by the beach.
Be the first to ReplyWhat a fabulous place.
We just happened upon it while strolling and the plates of the people eating on the patio looked so good that we decided to give it a try. Our waiter was so welcoming & recommended a few items. Everything he recommended was delicious! The Hara bara, mushroom dosa ( w/variety of sauces) & Channa bhatura and dal fry were so good. They moved a heater over to make sure we stayed warm w/o us asking. And the street was lively on a Friday evening. Great place!
Be the first to ReplyWow! So delicious .
Really small portions so you need to order a lot of food to get full. I got everything spicy it was delicious they put so many green chili in my food you were able to see it. I will definitely be coming back.
Be the first to ReplyTUMBI has become our new favorite Indian restaurant.
It's the perfect mix of authentic Indian food that also borders on trendy, but not overly trendy where it takes away from the authenticity. We ordered the mushroom dosa with truffle oil - the dosa was delicious, chewy and crispy on the outside. Butter chicken is a must!! The prawn curry dish was ok- the prawns itself were great but the dish's flavor was missing something, and it tasted too close to Thai food than Indian. We will be back soon!
Be the first to ReplySuper delicious Indian food.
I recommend the paper dosa and paneer tikka masala. The sauces are so flavorful and mouth watering. The pani puri we had last time was also excellent and fun (you poke a hole and fill it with the liquid from the beaker). I only wouldn't recommend the palak paneer, which is my usual dish at the other Indian places I regularly go to (Jaipur and Chandni).

Bring these stars up! Michelin loves this place as much as I do! Wow. Jump on my lap and call me Susie. The shrimp coconut curry was EPIC. Add naan or saffron rice and you will skip all the way back to public parking. The starter stir fry was delish I would have been happy with a double portion. Cheese naan was so yum. Lentil soup some of the best I've ever had. Cauliflower yum but wouldn't have minded if it was a bit more crispy but still would get again. The lamb and the chutney trio, also (heart emoji). Bravo! Bravo!
Be the first to ReplyRude Staff, its NOT Authentic Indian food.
I can only smell is butter in the food. Seriously Butter... Poor Presentation of the food. I dont know how they claim on their website they got Michelin star..the presentation with stale food and raw onion on the plate, is not adding anything to the presentation. Not worth the place for the price they are asking.
