AWFUL!!!!
Absolutely awful service, waiting half an hour for drinks and 1 hour 10 minutes for bread when we decided to leave, we were then verbally abused as we left and told that it was our fault for the poor service, staff were argumentative, aggressive and useless, as someone for visits Portugal 2/3 times a year this is an insult to the culture and food served there!

Be the first to ReplyAwful service
Lacking in atmosphere and service was miserable at best. When the food arrived they only brought one main course. The manager said thatโs what we orderedโฆ.in no way would that make sense! No apology and he told us we couldnโt order another one! Worst experience ever! Totally confused at how this restaurant is still open!
Be the first to ReplyGreat visit prior to a show
Had a great time! Lovely food, service just right. Nice prawns and ribs to start. Piri piri chicken was good and tender, if a bit salty (from the brine?). Pork loin dish was perfect and the custard tart (had to be done!) finished it nicely. In the book for a further visit when in town.
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Portuguese Food
Delicious Portuguese inspired dishes that were beautifully presented. We were told when booking they the whole service would take around 3 hours and it did. However the food was worth the wait. Very delicious. Attentive and friendly staff that kept our glasses filled.
Be the first to ReplyCold food, crazy waits, aggressive and very rude manager. Avoid.
We arrived at 8pm, and were greeted with confusion, as it appeared our table had been given away. We were given no explanation and kept waiting at the door, until several minutes later room was found for us in the (half empty) restaurant. Our party of five ordered two starters and two snacks. At 8:50, we were presented with a cold bowl of soup, cold croquettas, bread, and olives. I sent the soup back, but when it did eventually return, it turned out to be totally lacking flavour. Even some salt and pepper would have improved it. The croquettas were eaten as by that point everyone was very hungry. The restaurant looked about half full, and I cannot understand (nor was any explanation offered for) the long delays. It seemed at times like a sheer lack of interest - the table next to us were left with dessert menus for about 20 minutes before anyone bothered to take their order, despite the waiter loitering around next to the till and then going to set places at an empty table, presumably for lunch tomorrow. We then waited another 30 minutes for our main courses to arrive. Astonishingly, the fish stew was again cold. I was so frustrated by that point that I just asked for it to be taken away. I didnโt want it reheated, I just wanted to get away as soon as possible by that point. Four of the five members of our party reported their meal was cold too. The sides of rice were cold, and the waiter said this could not be the case because he had โchecked them downstairs.โ He became quite aggressive, and whilst the other members of my party said they would eat theirs cold (it was past 9:30 and we were very hungry!), he took the rice sides away. He came back later, and without saying a word - his hands visibly shaking with apparent fury - he put the rice dishes back on the table, and walked away without any kind of apology or explanation. We asked for the bill as it was now 9:50pm and we were keen to get away as quickly as possible. The fact that they had the *cheek* to include a 12.5% service charge on the bill was astonishing. They had removed the fish stew I sent back and did not eat, and the two sides of rice. That was it. We immediately asked for the service charge to be removed, and were told by the waiter that the manager was needed to make adjustments. He went to get him, and when he arrived, it turned out he was the aggressive waiter from earlier. We told him about our awful experience. He looked entirely uninterested, and said he would remove the service charge. My colleague then asked if that was all he was going to remove given our experience. He said that was all he could do. When asked why, he claimed he was โa supervisor, not a managerโ (a distinction I confess I remain rather puzzled by), and only a manager could do that. I asked him to get the manager, but he claimed the manager had โgoneโ. He then said he could take off the drinks (how this was possible for a mere โsupervisorโ we can only guess), and went away apparently to do this. When he returned, his manner was very different. He apologised that our evening had been so poor, and I said that โall he could doโ was put it โon the houseโ, which I understood to mean the bill for the evening. He put a folded bill down on the table though, and when we looked at it, the only change was that some beers had been removed - everything else, including two glasses wine and a mocktail, was still there. I was confused and asked the waiter to check with the manager, as I had understood him to say the meal was on the house but the bill implied not. We heard what sounded like a heated argument next door in the room with the bar, and after several minutes the waiter returned and said the bill was what we still had to pay. I was then even more confused and asked why the drinks were still on there if he had gone away in the first place to take the drinks off. He said the drinks were not on the bill. I pointed out that the wine and mocktail was still there. He then announced in a tone of irritation that *some* drinks had been taken off and that was all they could do. At this point everyone was tired, I was hungry, and nobody could be bothered continuing this utterly ridiculous conversation, so we paid it and left. As I stood outside waiting on the rest of the party, the other waiter stood drying a glass, glowering at me. Such a shame - I was planning on going back at the weekend with a friend. I most assuredly will not be doing that now. Another member of our party actually said he had booked a meal with a friend later there in the week too - he has now cancelled. I have never had an experience like this. The manager (err sorry, โsupervisorโ) was so aggressive, unpleasant, and totally unapologetic. The other waiters were totally unconcerned and did not care. If youโre in Covent Garden and want somewhere nice to eat, I can recommend Oystermen instead. I went recently, and the service and food were *outstanding*. Needless to say, I will certainly not be going near Volta again.
Be the first to ReplyPrice gouging on Valentineโs day
I booked a table way back in December last year specifically for valentineโs day. Then, on 11 February I received a call from the restaurant informing me that the was only one menu, prix fixe at ยฃ65. This is even more than their most expensive โfeastingโ menu option(ยฃ60) displayed on their website! Easily twice the usual price for a restaurant of this sort. The person on the phone even mentioned that they were โfully bookedโ as if to brag that my business was not necessary. Obviously the restaurant is taking advantage of the last minute notice, expecting boyfriends and husbands to cough up extra. I have just made another check on their website, the โspecialโ menu is not listed ANYWHERE. Thankfully I am blessed to have an understanding girlfriend, and i have cancelled the reservation. Dont count on your plans with this restaurant, even booking 2 months in advance wonโt save you from such exploitative behaviour. A word of advice to the owners, itโs such a simple no brainer to put up your menu on the website as an image or a PDF, and let people decide if they have the budget and want to spend it at your restaurant. Instead you have decided on a bait and switch. I hope you are truly as popular as you think and can fill the empty table on such short notice.
Be the first to ReplyQuick meal before catching a show on Drury Lane
What an excellent find this restaurant was. Hadnโt pre-booked but was arriving early (5.30pm) for a pre show meal. Food was delicious and the Mozambican green rice and the broccoli sides were beautiful accompaniments. Now need another excuse to come in to Covent Garden so I can eat here again!
Be the first to ReplyExcellent Portuguese food and wine
Well deserving of the recommendation in the Michelin Guide. Delicious starters and main courses. Attentive service. The person running the kitchen really cares about the quality of food and presentation.
Be the first to ReplyA cautionary tale of two prawns with a side of police.
From arriving at 7.30pm there was clearly an issue with service. However, as we were there for a special occasion we didnโt want to make a fuss and we had preordered our food, how wrong could it go? But at 10pm when we still hadnโt been served our main courses we started to question things. Eventually the food arrived (after 3 hours). According to the manager this is what should be expected and not out of the ordinary and she brought out her laptop to show her confirmation email to us which stated the โtable would be 3-3.5 hoursโ. One of us who had paid an additional ยฃ18 on top of the ยฃ45 set menu for prawns was only given 2 prawns as her main course. Again, we questioned this and were told this was a normal sized portion. After a shambolic evening with no service we tried to remove the service charge from the bill. We were told we couldnโt leave until we paid it. As we refused to pay for something we never got the manager called the police. When the police arrived they confirmed that this wasnโt an appropriate matter for them to deal with. Not only had our time been wasted but also the polices. The manager during this time attempted to charge our card without our consent for the full amount. I would only recommend coming here if you want a story to tell for the rest of the year, otherwise it was a long wait for overpriced tiny portions with poor service and a hint of illegal activity.
Be the first to ReplyBirthday Meal
I love the little restaurant and i love the owners so welcoming. Came here for my birthday with the boys for a little bit of home food that we grew up on. I absolutely loved it and enjoyed myself, the only issue i had was growing up on this food to then pay for it at this price, is questionable but ill do it again. A slice of memories in each of the bites. The host was amazing, we had one of the owners and had great conversation.
Be the first to ReplyAn amazing experience
I am Portuguese and I travelled many Portuguese speaking countries. This restaurant basically picks the best I experienced around the world and materialised it in an amazing experience. Muito obrigado ! Comida simplesmente excelente. The staff is extremely friendly. Very very good ! I am sure I will be back again and with friends to experience this amazing experience. Thank you so much. Muito obrigado !

The food was excellent from the ham croquettes and prawns to start through to the fish and prawn stew and piri piri chicken
Be the first to ReplyDelicious Dinner and Great Service
We ate at Volta do Mar tonight and enjoyed the whole experience. The service from start to finish was warm, efficient and welcoming. We ate Croquettes, Fish & Prawn Stew with Green Rice, Baked Salt Cod and had a Portuguese Tart & the Banana Cake for dessert. The Stew and Green Rice were standouts amongst other great dishes. Pricing was reasonable and the cocktails and wine were fabulous. What a great place to finish our month in Europe.

Authentic Portuguese food and great service. The Peri peri chicken was fabulous. The sardine pate reminded me of trips to Lisbon. Lovely restaurant in a vibrant exciting area. Thanks guys.

Excellent place to enjoy a creative portuguese and brasilian food. It is very modern but tasty and generous. The place is really nice and cosy. The team is great too. I really recommend this place for all flavoured and tasty food lovers.
Be the first to ReplyRelaxed restaurant, charming staff
Would highly recommend this restaurant: absolutely charming staff; great food and location in Covent Garden; calm and relaxed atmosphere; well-spaced tables. We spent a long time in this restaurant with family and, unusually for London, were not hurried along at all. The nicest restaurant experience in London for quite some time!
Be the first to ReplyAmazing place and food!
Amazing restaurant, great environment and staff very nice! Food is simple delicious really a Michelin well deserved! Recommend the octopus and the fish & prawn & moqueca with Moรงambique green rice, itโs a pleasure in your mouth! Highly recommend this restaurant!
Be the first to ReplySlowest Service We Can Remember
Some items we wanted to try had sold out by 7.30, and it took an interminable time for any kind of service, despite the restaurant being quite small. It was over two hours to eat a bread course, chicken and chips and an underwhelming dessert.
Everything was so slow, and whilst the chicken was tasty it simply wasn't worth the money or frustration of constantly waiting for our waiter to notice us and do anything.
Wonderful atmosphere and appetising cuisines โญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธโญ๏ธ
Had a great experience this evening, I ordered their Grilled Prawns โLaurentinaโ as a starter and Bafassa Pork Belly with Tumeric Potatoes & Chargrilled Savoy Cabbage as my main. It was beyond amazing .I highly recommend to visit and dine at Volta Do Mar. I will definitely come back! The staff are very welcoming and I can really see the passion they have in the hospitality industry.
Be the first to ReplyTruly dreadful experience
From the moment we arrived the staff were unwelcoming and clearly inexperienced.
Booked the restaurant a little while ago so a Portuguese national I could enjoy a Portuguese meal for my birthday.
THIS IS NOT PORTUGUESE FOOD. The bacalhau com natas was so dreadful, inedible and had to be sent back. Even Nandos do Piri piri chicken better and they don't pretend to be Portuguese. And the English manager - was just plain rude and distracted by his ear piece and incredibly disinterested in making us feel welcome..
We left before finishing our supper and our entire evening ruined.
And guess what they charged the full ยฃ130 incl service for 2 people.
You have been warned this is not an example of true Portuguese food and Portuguese hospitality.
Lovely meal
We had a really enjoyable meal for my husband's birthday last weekend.
The service was very good and the food was delicious. We particularly enjoyed the croquettes and the octopus and we finished the meal with a lovely glass of port.
One the whole we had a really lovely evening but I was a little disappointed that although I noted in my booking that it was my husband's birthday it wasn't acknowledged at all. A simple 'happy birthday' on arrival would have been nice.
Expensive with slow inexperienced service
We came here as a group of 5, on the positive side, the decor of the restaurant is nice, however as a portuguese native, this is anything but a representation of portuguese/brazilian/mozambican cuisine.
Slow service and unfriendly staff alongside expensive starters and cold toasted sourdough.
The fish stew had a few bits of fish and two small prawns , but was largely just a bowl of sauce for ยฃ20.
I really wanted to like this restaurant and was looking forward to it but sadly it is simply overpriced and not helped by unfriendly inexperienced slow service
Avoid for now but it was the potential to do better, this can be seen by some very tasty starter croquettes.
Poor service
The food was pretty good but unfortunately completely overshadowed by very slow service, inattentive and over stretched staff
