Despite the picturesque setting of St. Barts, my recent dining experience at Bonito fell short of expectations, with zero stars. The restaurant's reservation policy, which includes a hefty charge of 150 Euro per person for last-minute changes, lacked flexibility and understanding, particularly in the face of treacherous weather and road conditions. The unyielding stance on this matter was disappointing, casting a shadow over our visit. Because Bonito refused to accommodate our reservation to another day, even though they had availability, we drove in the downpour, in the dark and steep hills of St. Barts to make our reservation. To add to the challenges, upon arriving at the front entrance, the lobby of the restaurant was flooded with a foot of water due to the downpour, leaving us completely drenched before we even stepped inside. This further compounded the already difficult situation. Furthermore, it was noted that many other restaurants, such as Le Guerite, closed their doors for those couple of days due to the weather and demonstrated understanding by contacting their customers and expressing concern for their safety. Many individuals had to cancel their plans due to the dangerous rainstorm (36 hours of heavy rain continuously), highlighting the severe impact of the conditions. Driving on the steep hills and tiny roads of St. Barts in the dark while it's pouring rain is unbelievably dangerous. Upon seating at Bonito, the menu revealed exorbitant prices, with even the most basic items carrying a significant cost. The least expensive option, french fries for 18 euros, left much to be desired in terms of value for money. When expressing our concerns to the manager, we were met with a dismissive attitude, lacking empathy and understanding of the challenges we encountered. The manager said, "You could have taken a taxi." Again, they were dismissive and insensitive to anyone's well-being, including taxi drivers. Overall, the lack of responsiveness to customer needs, the exorbitant pricing for basic fare, and the contrasting approach with other establishments left a sour taste. While the breathtaking views of St. Barts provide a stunning backdrop, the insensitivity to extenuating circumstances and the unreasonably high prices marred what could have been a memorable dining experience. In the end, we had our 18 Euro fries at Bonito and went across the street to L'Isola and were treated properly with wonderful service and fantastic food. They even gave us a free glass of champagne because they heard how horribly we were treated at Bonito. There are numerous beautiful and terrific restaurants in St. Barts, and nobody needs to risk their lives to eat in a place where they are treated poorly with a $$$$$ tab.
