Don the Beachcomber Kailua-Kona Reviews from The Last Year
Second time, pretty just ok
Many many empty tables and still had to wait, service was ok, no follow up for more coffee or anything. Food was just ok. Nice views.
Awesome appetizers for happy hour.
The appetizers are to die for. We had the coconut shrimp-6 pieces instead of the usual 5-and the poke nachos. The nachos came in a large bowl, chock full of tuna. My husband, who proclaims he would never eat raw fish or seaweed, loved them! We will definitely be back here tomorrow. Where else can you get amazing maitais for $8?
Fresh marlin was delicious
The poke bowl was delicious but instead of two scoops of rice to fill the bowl I would have liked more fish and seaweed salad. Our salad was fresh but the dressing was not homemade. The marlin was the BEST part of the meal. The view is exceptional and service was quick.
Good breakfast with outstanding view
We came here for breakfast and had a wonderful table overlooking the ocean. Very calm and peaceful. Menu is small with limited choices. But what is offered is tasty with moderate prices, same as other local places. Our waiter was friendly and attentive. We enjoyed it.
Nice Place for Drinks
We visited for afternoon drinks twice while on the island. Both times we easily got seats at the bar. The first day our bartender Estelle was excellent. Prompt friendly service and we enjoyed watching her make drinks. She's a machine! We loved the different types of mai-tais. On the second visit we were purposefully ignored by the blond bartender working our side of the bar. I guess it was towards the end of her shift, but it was crazy to have her check on the guy right next to us without even acknowledging our presence. Luckily, the guy working the other side of the bar (I'm sorry I don't remember his name) came over and waited on us. Still a nice atmosphere and great drinks if you are in the area.
DO NOT PATRONIZE THIS ESTABLISHMENT ON THURSDAY NIGHTS UNLESS YOU’RE RELATED OR FRIENDS WITH THE PERFORMER.
I would rate this 0 out of 5 stars Checked in at 3:30 pm, checked twice, no call, at 4:30 pm checked again. Oh they called us! Waited 90 minutes Understand it’s a Thursday night. Not a gracious host/place at all. Do Not Frequent! Never and I mean Never coming here again and we live here year ‘round
Rude staff
Rude staff both times we tried to get drinks or dinner. They claimed there was a waitlist but 1/2 tables were empty. We just wanted to sit with our drinks. Made to feel like criminals for sitting. I put our name in and never called after 3 hours. They seem to pick favorites for dining. We went to On The Rocks next door. Better music and lovely staff.
Where’s the atmosphere?
Something is changing. It used to be our favorite place for watching the sunset and drinking the best mai tai in town. From a Hawaiian atmosphere it’s becoming a generic, loud music ( not Hawaiian). You can barely hear yourself. It’s no longer a relaxing place. I hope they realize they will be loosing customers. People are there for the Hawaiian tropical ambiance not any sports bar. It’s ok to hear the waves crashing. If you don’t want to play Hawaiian music then don’t blast it. Were there to enjoy each others company and chill.
AWESOME
Great view. Delicious food & drinks. Seating available for larger groups. Bar seating with tv's. Ocean view available. Take out available. Located inside the Royal Kona Resort. 3hour parking validation available for non resort guests. Free Live music on Thursday's. Get drinks to go and walk around resort. Friendly staff everyone is great. Opens at 6:30am and it does get busy early with most travelers used to their own time zones. First come first serve. Highly recommend. Glasses for purchase in gift shop. Shout out to Desmond 🤙 🍹 Mahalo
Breakfast is Great
Good food with an even better view. We had breakfast one morning: loco moco was an experience. Two eggs, hamburger patty on rice covered with mushroom gravy. Not a big fan of gravy but I loved it.
