Second time to Gwen first came in Jan 2024 and now March 2024. The charcuterie plate is excellent (best we have had outside of Europe). The mixed salad is huge and tasty. First time we split a New York strip, the first pieces were great but once it cooled a little we thought it was a little chewy. We did wagyu filet the second time which was what we hoped for. It is a splurge meal, particularly if doing wagyu menu, but we would go back again.

So now we have traveled in North, South and Central America for almost 7 months. We have eaten out twice a day. And this place was definitely in the top 5. The canadian oysters, though on the smaller side, were super fresh and very good. The charcuterie was excellent, as was everything else; the cocktails, the meat (did not order from the wague menu) the sides and the dessert. It never happens that we are happy with everything, but this time we were. Thank you to our waitress Tonya for great service too. We will be back.
Be the first to ReplyGreat BDay Celebration
We went to Gwen to celebrate a birthday, just great. Amazing service from Johan, from beginning to end. The sommelier managed to recommend a wine within the budget and characteristics that we asked for, just great. Food was unbelievable, service great, overall an amazing experience.
Be the first to ReplyMichelin one star awarded steakhouse
Michelin rated restaurant focused on humanely raised meat. Came here before a show at the Pantages and made a reservation online in advance for 4:30pm. Valet parking is available but you can also find 2 hour street parking in the neighborhood (so long as it’s before 6pm). They have Aesop soap and lotion in the restrooms. The food was incredible. For instance, the bread was one of the best breads ever. My mom (who normally doesn’t even bread at restaurants) even asked for some more because it was that good. Super crispy on the outside with a sprinkling of salt with a fluffiness on the inside, you’ll be well tempted to eat all of it immediately, but I’d caution you to save some if you order the charcuterie, as it doesn’t come with any crackers or bread for the meats. The charcuterie was also the best charcuterie I’ve had; my favorites were the andouille spread and the chorizo. The duck speck and the pate also deserve honorable mentions. The ossobucco was very tender and a very large portion (it also has the bone marrow). The New York strip was also so soft; even when reheating it for leftovers the following day, the meat was still tender. You get to choose your own knife if you order either of those dishes. The Hiramasa Kingfish is good if you have a smaller appetite or want something lighter; it comes with a green foam and spring veggies. We also got a side of the mushroom spaetzle which was very rich and cheesy. We left very full after the meal. They’ll box your food for you and you pick it up at the host stand.
Be the first to ReplyNot worthy of a Michelin Star at all - highly over-rates this average steak house.
Shocking that this place got a Michelin Star - certainly not worthy. While the downstairs decor is attractively art deco, there is also a small upstairs area that is much quieter but arguably less buzzy and interesting - plus you feel the vibration of the A/C or something through the seating banquettes. Now to the food: very uninteresting menu - nothing unique or creative. No amuse bouche (as most M-star places have), a very short and uninteresting drinks menu (the whisky sour was OK but rather weak), the presentation of courses was boring (no unique plateware), and the forks look like old forks from my high school cafeteria), While the steak was well cooked and clearly a quality piece of meat, the side dishes were blah. The duck fat potatoes had no unique flavour and were basically 'country fries', and the cauliflower was cooked in an odd vingear based sauce. The wine list was laughable. The first three wines I tried to secure were all out of stock and the wine steward admitted the whole wine list needs redoing as some much is not available - I'm sorry but if you want to promote yourselves as a M-star restaurant then reprint the wine list periodically. While the service was friendly, that was about it. There's nothing special here at all, and the overall experience is no better than a Bib Gourmand (at best). I have no doubt the star will be gone by next review.

This is fantastic fine dining! Great selection of meals, all designed for sharing. The green market salad and the pear and fig salads were perfect. The steak was tender and delicious. The lamb chops were divine - melting in the mouth! Even the accompanying bread was to die for. For those whose eyesight is not the best, make sure you have a phone for shining on the menu as the lighting is quite dim. Fantastic service and very attentive waiters. We did not have to wait long for our meals.

We are on a family holiday and went to Gwen on a recommendation of a friend. The purpose is to share the menus. It is not cheap but it is worth every penny. The food was great. The new york strip is definitely a recommendation!
Be the first to ReplyOutstanding food and service. Unbeatable - do not miss out on this!
You won’t get a chance to be fed by a quality chef (and his team), as well as served by and incredibly skilled staff until you dine at this stunning venue. Meat lovers, eat your hearts out on the finest quality cuts cooked to perfection, however, to my pescatarian, vegetarian, etc friends, do not in any way think you have been overlooked. There is something for everyone here at this exquisite venue, and the accompanying wine and cocktail list is breathtaking. Don’t waste another minute, everyone here will make you feel so welcome and loved, and you will eat some of the best food you’ve tasted in your life. This man and his dedicated team know exactly what they’re doing. I’m from overseas and this surpasses all other LA restaurants I’ve tried. Thank you Gwen.

During these tough and scary times Gwen and their sister restaurant Maude have figured out how to help everyone get great food and stay safe at the same time. Whether it is their amazing Stecca bread, lasagne, items form their butcher shop or produce they keep adding food to make your life easier. Check out gwentogo and see.
Be the first to ReplyHow to ruin a 20 year anniversary dinner in 3 steps
We picked Gwen to celebrate our 20th anniversary and it was a big mistake. We arrived a few moments before our reservation time and we were welcome with an unfriendly approach. We were sited in the middle of the restaurant at the far table almost close to the beautiful kitchen area. We waited for almost 15 minutes and nobody was able to help us. The restaurant wasn't busy, but the first thing that gentleman that helped us did was to justify the lack of service because the person assigned to our table was on training and "he wasn't ready to work with us." He apologized, putting us on a very awkward position because he basically was forced to serve us. Following, we had empty Champagne glasses for 10 minutes, the sommelier wasn't around... luckily we were able to order... and in the middle of the dinner our server told us that he was not going to help us anymore because the manager told him to go upstairs (whatever that means.).
The next person helping us was unfriendly, uninterested, kind of lost, and didn't care about creating a good experience for us AT ALL. He basically wanted us to leave ASAP.
The food is very good at Gwen, but my believe is that if you are not able to provide a memorable experience is better to run a different business. For almost $500 I think we deserved better.
so awful
food though not bad but definitely not spectacular and extremely puny servings. obnoxiously over-the-top $. wine pour is laughable, just like a tasting pour. service distant and unresponsive. i know fine dining.
Be the first to ReplyFir$t Impre$$ions are Critically Important
Gwen is a visual treat to experience if you love ogling meat. If you expect world class service and food at very high prices, it’s not even close. We came to embrace the total dining experience and Gwen failed to deliver on the most basic of expectations - accuracy and execution. From asking the waiter if I could please have the cocktail I ordered after the appetizers were delivered to being presented a steak knife duller than a butter knife to reminding the waiter to remove my ordered-and-never-delivered side dish from the bill to asking for a pen to complete the ransom transaction, it still failed to dampen our high spirited reunion. I will give the waiter high marks for honesty when he commented at the end, without apologizing, ‘I feel like I’ve ignored you this evening!’. In keeping with that sentiment, I have to say ignore Gwen, there are significantly better investments to be made in culinary experiences!!
Be the first to ReplyExtremely Poor Service
We arrived on time with a reservation at 8:00 and the place was empty with only two tables seated. They told us we had to wait 8 minutes before we could be seated (what?!?!?). I asked why and the host person said that they had a system and we couldn’t be seated for 8 minutes and we were to wait at the bar and suggested we order a drink. I asked why we couldn’t sit at our table for 8 minutes and have a drink since it wasn’t busy. The person got very tasty and told us to wait. We should have left then! The rest of the night was terrible with inconsistent service and very poor timing of food delivery. After our starters it took 45 minutes for the meat to arrive. They were very proud of the fact that the kitchen cooks with no electricity - and said that is why it was so slow. But they cook the meat on a grill and it was empty so why did it take 45 mins for a medium rare steak? My guests lamb was not edible as it had a horrible smell. My late steak at least tasted good. The waiter was arrogant and made it seem like we should be grateful to be eating there. We won’t be going back.

My wife says the best bread, scallops , salad and wine she has ever had. Pretty much sums up Gwen. Lamp chops tasty and dessert excellent. This was a Monday night and the place was almost full. Curtis Stone knows what he’s doing even down to selecting your own steak knife. Slick service without being annoying. Definitely a highlight of our time in LA.
Be the first to ReplyDisappointed...
My husband & I are huge Curtis Stone fans & were really looking forward to dining in his LA restaurant, unfortunately we left disappointed.
On arrival met by nice lady & shown to our seats, server arrived offering still or sparkling water. Then given an extensive wine list, we couldn't find any wines on there we recognised so my husband ended up going with a cocktail & I had a glass of Rose.... I also asked for a Sprite, to be told they don't serve any products like that - the best he could do was Soda water!
Our server arrived again to take our order, he didn’t explain anything on the menu and we had to ask what the Gwen 5 course tasting menu included, surely this should have been something you are told when menus are given to you ?
We chose the tasting menu -
Course 1 : charcuterie board - The bread was delicious & so was the pork & duck paste
Course 2: scallop - this was delicious
Course 3: mushroom risotto - Best bit of the meal for us...
Course 4: 12oz New York strip - should have been the highlight but wasn’t, we’ve eaten better cooked steak in other resturants.
Course 5: Chocolate Torte - not to my taste
The staff were friendly enough & answered any questions we had but unfortunately
nice staff don't justify the average food with a high price tag!! The biggest thing for me was the 4% healthcare charge that was added to the bill, apparently the is to provide the works with health insurance. The waiter wasn't sure if it was a restaurant specific thing or state wide - i have not been charged it before!
Such a disappointment to us on our last night in California!
Great visit
We ate dinner here during a recent visit. We ate from the tasting menu. We liked the decor which I would describe as Art Deco style. The wait staff gave great service. We were asked to choose our knife for the steak which was a nice touch. Each course was well thought out and complemented the previous course. We would recommend. They also serve good cocktails.
Be the first to ReplyAnniversary Meal
So,
We did the 5 course prefix dinner
charcuterie and then a seared trout followed by a mushroom risotto, and a New York strip and then a flourless chocolate cake
They set us up with a nice glass of champagne complementary,, The food service just gonna set the food down and leave, they asked if we would kindly move from our table to the patio for our dessert, to make room for other diners, but they comped us on the Spanish dessert wine.
85 per person, hundred dollar bottle of wine, plus tip
Speedy, attractive Restaurant,
very good quality steak, but ultimately misses the mark.
Stoic service, exceptionally expensive meats; a 12 oz fillet was $190. À la cart.
Swing and a miss.
