HORSEELE Gent Reviews from The Last Year
Disillusioned
I had been looking forward to our dinner at Horseele for a while. We came with a group, so I expected a customized menu to be provided. The amuses: due to allergies, I received 2 adapted amuses. Beautiful and very tasty. The tone was set. 1st course, salmon with couscous, carrot structures: the curry mayonnaise was dominant, the salmon could hardly be tasted. 2nd dish, Oosterschelde lobster with fish stock and tom-kha-kai. My piece of lobster was literally divided into 5 pieces. The smell was something I immediately noticed - very unpleasant. 2 pieces were edible, the 3rd piece was boiled flat, the remaining 2 looked gray, mushy and unappetizing. Way too much sauce, the dish was also not hot enough. 3rd dish, which was immediately dessert; a scoop of ice cream with rhubarb structures. OK, tasty, but not more than that. Coffee was forgotten, wrong tea served. Bread was not replenished with the meal. I think the bar is quite dated. It was incredibly warm in the separate room. People did not really know how the air conditioning worked, so the lights were dimmed a bit to prevent it from heating up any further... The waiters did their best, we had a nice evening with the group, but I don't think this restaurant deserves its star (anymore).
Disappointing experience at a top restaurant!!
After I personally wrote to the owner about a number of rather disturbing things that happened during our dinner, I received no explanation or response. That's why I decided to write this publicly now. The quality of the food was TOP and the presentation worthy of Horseele. But the fact that the sommelier (?) loudly recommended the wine selection to the entire room and that it was very cold there and therefore uncomfortable was not possible for us. It was the second time we ate there. We at least expected that the owner would write us back with a valid reason and perhaps that he would make some adjustments to these matters.
Below expectations
First time visiting this restaurant, went there for a special occasion with high expectations and all the expectations were more or less met til head course but then slowly the impression started going down. First thing that struck us a bit odd was that we were presented the menu while we were in the middle of complimentary appetizer. The appetizer itself was absolutely delicious and beautifully presented, however it was only 4-5 bites that I would have wanted to enjoy and not have to look into a menu inbetween. The starter was also very delicious and interesting flavour combinations. The wine was good and adequately introduced at the table with a little bit of background and tasting notes. The head course was a bit disappointing though. You would expect this to be the grand finale in a way but it was very overwhelming. Nothing spectacular, nothing very interesting or unique, quite bland in comparison to the appetizer and starter. We also felt like we were forgotten by this time cause all of our glasses were empty but there was no question about more wine or water. Eventually our empty wine glasses were sitting on the table til the point we left. Not something I have experienced in such a restaurant before. Throughout the dessert and complimentary sweets they stayed there. We were also not offered any water til we finally asked it with the bill. So essentially the last 20min or so of us staying there we were completely neglected, even when trying to get the attention of the staff. It was lunch and only 4 other tables were occupied at this point. The dessert was a little bit boring for our taste, again as with head course, nothing memorable. Selection of cheeses was really good. As was the bread. All in all very high hopes and thoughts in the beginning but after the starter and wine to accompany head course things slowly started to lose its colours for us. Cool view over the stadium. A little bit disappointed, for 120 eur lunch would expect a tad bit more.

When you sell a reservation that has a prepaid fee AT takes a commission on that fee. This doesn’t really make sense because it’s an expense the seller incurs not part of the profit that is shared.
For example:
Carbone NYC fee to book table for 2 is $108.88
If you sell it for $200 on AT you get $140 from them.
Your net profit is $31 and AT collects $60 in fees.
It would make more sense not to charge commission on the upfront fee as this creates a disincentive and results in higher costs for buyers.

Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
