John's of 12th Street New York Reviews from The Last Year
One of the best overall Italian restaurants in the city.
Doing family style where everyone tries everything is the best. The pollo mimosa and chicken parmigiana is ridiculous. I get Caesar salad with anchovie and the meatballs. Mouth is watering just by the thought of it. Very cozy longest candle wax ever and waiters are like stallions. Must try

Great history great food - been going here since 1964 with my parents. Always treated like family and have eaten my way through the menu many times. Definitely worth a visit for so e great old school Italian and history

Staff was nice enough, but disappointing and mediocre food. I ordered the carbonara, which was served with bacon, not pancetta. Like strips of bacon you would have with breakfast. Husband also found his dish uninspired and blah.

I recently had a sit down at John's with a friend of ours who's a good earner. He made his bones about a block away from here. We straightened some things out over a nice bottle of Sangiovese. Next started with the veal meatballs which were bellissimo! I followed up with the Tuscan Ragu over homemade Pappardelle, while our friend had the Chicken Parm. Everything was delicious and the boys waiting tables treated us with respect.

Enjoyed John's of 12th Street over the years, typically a destination with guests from out of town looking for a place in the Village and who'd appreciate a good Italian meal in an intimate "old school" setting. The atmosphere is special. Have never been disappointed. As I normally do, went last night for Veal Cutlet Parmigiana with linguini. (See pic.) It was a solid entree,... but what really knocked our socks off was the absolutely amazing homemade house salad dressing - with familiar notes. My similarly foodie dinner companions and I, savoring the flavor, tried to identify how it was made, however it eluded us. We hoped John's of 12 Street's "Auntie Rae" would let us know. When the waiter returned, we asked. Not revealing the secrets to the sauce, he only indicated it included anchovies. (Note - It tastes nothing like Caesar dressing.) If anyone out there knows what's in their house dressing, please let us know! We promise not to share the secret... that is if it is a secret!!! Another thing this round that caught my attention in particular, beyond the wall art, was the restaurant's beautiful floor mosaics. (See pic.) It all contributed to another wonderful experience at John's of 12th Street we'll share and talk about well after the meal.
Amazing food for everyone, especially if you are vegan!
I've been fortunate to visit New York a lot through work and pleasure, I've eaten in a lot of restaurants but I genuinely believe this was the best meal I've eaten in the city. Eggplant alla Parmigiana is a personal favourite and they did an amazing version. My son went for the Sausage Penne Marinara and loved it. My daughter went with the shrimp, another success. But the best is saved for last, as my wife is a Vegan and said it's the best meal she's had for a long, long time. If you are a vegan, I cannot recommend this restaurant enough. The selection was tremendous, the food was high quality and they even offered vegan Canoli! Finally, I must say the service was fantastic. We arrived without a booking, it was very wet and the kids were very tired, but they found us a table and looked after everything, nothing was too much trouble.
Absolutely wonderful! When we read about their vegan menu
Absolutely wonderful! When we read about their vegan menu we went to try a little dinner and dessert and I'm glad we did! My s/o ordered the John's Old Fashioned which he enjoyed (he loves an old fashioned) and surprisingly I did as well (usually I don't like them at all so that really surprised me!). We had some questions about the menu which the waiter kindly asked the chef and got back to us. We enjoyed the vegan Alfredo which was especially delicious with some of the Follow Your Heart parm on top. The owner asked us how everything was and when I asked about the famous Sopranos scene he kindly gave us a little tour of the place which was awesome! The inside is still the original early 1900s flooring and hand painted trim on the walls, which gives you that quaint, traditional old school Italian restaurant feel - which we appreciated. He showed us where the iconic Sopranos scene was filmed & gave us some other really cool history! My s/o and I both agreed, even if the food wasn't good (though totally not true) that experience alone made us want to go back! When we said we were too stuffed for dessert, the owner sent us home with some vegan tiramisu and cannoli to try. I am so excited to report they were absolutely divine!! Tiramisu was very tasty & I'd bet the cannoli is the best item on their ENTIRE menu. And it's vegan - almost couldn't believe it! Overall - nice traditional Italian place with both regular and vegan traditional Italian dishes. Service was good. We recommend the vegan Alfredo. Try John's Old Fashioned & do not leave without trying the cannoli. Heck, next time we're there we will absolutely be taking several to go! Thanks again for a wonderful meal & experience!
This place is still amazing and does no wrong! We go here
This place is still amazing and does no wrong! We go here for my husbands birthday each year and the food is always amazing and fresh. Get here early before it gets too crowded on weekends.
Good food, but very, very noisy.
I'm sure. It depends what time of day you go, but my party and I had a headache from the noise and ended up taking our meal to go so we could enjoy it in a quieter atmosphere. We wouldn't go back for that reason, unfortunately.
I had a happy experience at Johns of 12th street! I called
I had a happy experience at Johns of 12th street! I called ahead of time to make a reservation and the person I spoke to on the phone was very accommodating! As a vegan, it is so rare to find a vegan pasta place and Johns nailed it! Good portions, taste, and a very good and wide range of options for vegan!!!! I will 10000% return again. I got the vegan spaghetti and meatballs and split the vegan garlic bread with the table (both not pictured), and we also split the vegan cannoli and vegan tiramisu.
John's of 12th Street has a cozy interior with warm lights
John's of 12th Street has a cozy interior with warm lights and lots of Italian memorabilia across the wall. There are lots of Italian restaurants in the area but what makes this place unique is their vegan selection which has its own page in the menu. Vegans aren't stuck to ordering spaghetti marinara here so I ventured out to try the seitan parmigiana. The seitan was sliced into a thin cutlet and was lightly breaded, the flavor was great on this. I've never been a fan of vegan cheese, and this was no exception so I peeled that layer off. The parm was accompanied by some spaghetti that wasn't anything noteworthy. Our server was attentive and even in a large group our dishes came out without too much of a wait. The house red was fine and they had a selection of wines from Italy that I might opt to explore next time. I also tried the cheesecake which confused me a bit as it had a cake-like base. It tasted good but almost like it was confused as to whether it was supposed to be a cake or cheesecake. My meat-eating companions also enjoyed their meals so John's is a great place for people of any dietary preference to be able to enjoy quality Italian food.
Great Restaurant
Nice cozy atmosphere inside an authentic restaurant. Service is perfect. Good menu choices. Portion sizes are huge and the quality is great. The Johns Old Fashioned cocktail is lovely. Amazing value for money
The food was very tasty.
The service was also very good. They were also able to accommodate a large party.
The best food for the price in the city.
This place is my go to Italian spot. All the servers are amazing, the atmosphere of the room is great. I never had a bad meal and great for large groups. I took my family and the portions filled us up for days. It is amazing
I felt like I stepped into a time machine at John's of 12
I felt like I stepped into a time machine at John's of 12 Street. It's such a cool old-school, vintage red sauce joint with the cool booth seats and old hooks for your clothes to be hung. Generous portions! You can definitely split the Chicken Parmigiana with Spaghetti with two people. You can't go wrong here. This place is an old-school red sauce museum. Wear that nice dinner jacket.
Classic red sauce joint.
Big portions fair prices and friendly service from professional waiters. We went as a small group for a birthday and had a blast.
All your traditional Italian menu items with vegan Italian items as well!
Not our first time, but can’t say enough how great it is to have traditional Italian food as well as vegan Italian food on the menu! Love it always!
Stepping back in time
OUTSTANDING! Not only was John’s delicious but it was like stepping back in time. Between the ambience and the dripping candle centerpiece, I felt like I was in the era of the mafia. One of the owners was there to give us 1st hand accounts of those days. Truly fascinating and the meatball and spaghetti severed was just fantastic! Can’t wait to go back.
Nice authentic Italian dishes
Great for a night out with family and friends! Excellent vegan, vegetarian and traditional dishes! Everyone was able to easily choose a dish to meet their dietary needs! So good too!

Great Service - amazing dinner!!
Read about the site in NYT and bought a reservation at Mother Wolf in LA 2 days later. Worked great and the food was amazing!!!
Worked perfectly!
Got the reservation (that I couldn't get anywhere else) and was able to entertain a group of friends at the infamous Bern's Steakhouse.
Got into Nobu Malibu
Wonderful! My parents are visiting and we have wanted to go to Nobu Malibu for years. I tried getting a reservation myself but it was next to impossible. So glad I was able to buy a reservation on appointment trader for a decent price!
Very easy
Was very hesitant going into this experience but am glad to say that it worked out very well ! will definitely use appointment trader in the future
Fabulous Lunch
I was veeeeeerry skeptical that this would work, particularly at a restaurant as hard to get into as Nobu Malibu, and it was perfect! We had lunch outside on the patio and it was fabulous!
Great reviewer team
Just wanted to take a second to shout out the reviewer team. Even though they probably review hundreds of listings and bids a day, they still take the time to leave great comments and respond relatively quickly. Thanks!
Incredible
I got a reservation to Don Angie, which I've been trying to book for weeks! I am very happy with this service.
Best platform out there!
Super simple, easy, and fast to secure reservations for hard-to-get restaurants and locations!
This app is life changing
This app has opened my world up to so many wonderful new experiences I would never have the chance to have without access to this awesome app! 10/10!
Worked perfectly
Was a little nervous at first but was pleased to see that the booking went through flawlessly.
Highly recommended.

Worked well, got me into a restaurant with no availability
I was skeptical, and I still don't really know how they managed to find this hard-to-find reservation, but it was a win-win from my point of view, and I'll use this service again.
Last minute reservation for Delilah Las Vegas
Got a last minute reservation, dinner for 2 at Delilah Las Vegas: super impressed! The process was simple, transaction seamless. We had an amazing time! Couldn’t be happier! 😍
It works!
Ok at this point I've attended a reservation purchased on AT by a friend and sold a reservation personally. Both worked pretty smoothly, nothing sketchy about it. A few areas for improvement including a way to more directly communicate between buyers and sellers, but the app always seems to be in development. AT customer support is really(!) responsive and helpful too if you have questions!
Money transfer
As a seller, I like the fact i have the ability now to transfer money out of my AT account and into a bank account. Makes getting the money much easier then the process before.
Love this app
Got to go to places otherwise unreachable
Easy Access
Very easy to get into one of the hardest restaurants to reserve in New York.
Whose name will my reservation be under when I arrive at the venue?
It can be under your name or a name you choose! Some reservation offers already include the AppointmentTrader Transfer Service which will transfer the reservation in to your name. If its not included you can add it on after buying the reservation for a small fee. One thing on that though: As many reservations become available at last minute, taking a reservation in someone else name is quick and great for privacy. Most reservations on AT are listed with a virtual phone number, so all you need to do is present the phone number at the hostess stand and you are good to go!

I will give you 50% of ALL of my PROFITS if you teach me how to make profits?
LOL. Thank you The New Yorker.
Appointment
Transferring reservations is not supported in AT. Why not just use the name in the AT screenshot?
Buyers interested in Bern's Steakhouse: PLEASE READ
Same goes for 4 Charles and I Sodi
Prepaid Reservation Fee
Agreed. Ultimately not addressing this month after month is clearly resulting in a drop in certain venue’s rankings & sales.
Congrats on 3 mil
🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🍾🧨🧨🧨 now on to 30 mill!
Need to cancel a bid, not getting a response… how do I do it?
Click on "Take off the Market Option" in your portfolio
Working on your bid?
Your bid has been “matched” with a reservation. From the time a reservation has been located, the seller of the reservation must connect with moderator to give transfer information for reservation. If the seller;however, does NOT respond to reservation transfer, then your bid is reprocessed and returns to the first step, which is connecting your request to a reservation.
Process after bid is accepted.
Hey @EvocativeFold67, welcome to appointmenttrader! Once the reservation is in your portfolio, you definitely own the timeslot, the review team would not have approved the trade if the reservation wasn't confirmed - so you are going :-) Judging from your post you bid today and are going tomorrow - don't worry as long as you initiated the name transfer, you are good - the transfer service has to work with the opening hours of the reservation team of the respective venue. You will likely see the transfer confirmation a couple hours before your reservation time.
Where do the Reservations on AppointmentTrader come from?
Mostly from people who don't need their reservations or appointments any longer. AT has no relationship with places listed and acts as a platform connecting buyers and sellers making sure that listed reservations are real and that privacy is not compromised when transacting.
What happens if my bid expires unanswered?
Hey @FluffyStar64, thanks for the question! When you place your bid the amount gets transferred in a deposit account, the second you either cancel your bid or a few minutes after the bid expires the funds are moved back into your main account from where you can refund it to your payment method or use for other transactions.
