This Ramen place has always been a 4+ star ramen place in my book. I dont LOVE ramen, i just like it. But i can say this place was my favorite Ramen spot in the bay. They are always consistent in their food over the years and made a great office lunch place. I normally get a Shoyu Ramen and a Chicken Karage starter. The Ramen really hits the spot especially on a cold day. The Chicken Karage though is really what makes it for me. Ive had some bland, noncrusted, non flavored Karage in my day. But here at Orenchi, the Chicken Karage convinces me this is what Chicken Karage SHOULD TASTE like. Though I have not been to Japan, i can only guess this is the difference between fried chicken and a chicken karage. That being said, I can only positively say that Orenchi has the best Chicken karage ive had anywhere (yet).Usually a great place to eat. However recently ive seen other reviews that agree with my last visit. They started charging an automatic 15% service charge that started when they started to open back up a bit after COVID. Many people say this is a scam. I dont particularly think its a scam, but I do think this was a bad business move for Orenchi.. this is my takeaway from this decision (which is just my opinion btw and have no valid standing to why this restaurant did what it did):Orenchi wanted to start making money again due to being closed for a long time during COVID and so they decided to follow all guidelines and rehire to open again to serve food. So in the interim of doing this, they decide to charge (aka fine) the customer a 15% fee to reopen their doors. So instead of increasing the prices of their ramen to counter the expense of reopening, since they want to stay under $15 a bowl to attract customers and enforce customer-retention, they simply force a 15% "service" charge that does NOT relate to tip for the workers. So the customer ends up getting fined for the same bowl, but instead of thinking they raised prices, Orenchi made a point to make it look as if they are fining customers for patronage and still hold their hand out for tip culture. This means every bowl you eat here will end up with you feeling bad for their workers. Its pity penalty.. I wouldn't call this a scam per-say and i do feel for them, but there was clearly a better way of doing this.. It is honestly sad to know my favorite ramen place left me thinking this is more of a money-grab instead of a homely ramen shop. Until this changes, this is/was a good ramen place I used to go.
