Ah, the best laid plans : for months we were looking forward to a further return visit to wonderful San Francisco, but had to cut short our stay, to get home before the "Travel Ban" came into effect.
All was not lost, however - even in the all too few days we were in SF, we managed to fit in 2 pre-scheduled visits to "Seven Hills", experiences which put broad smiles on our faces!
Let's be clear : after 9 years offering excellent hospitality, "Seven Hills" has MOVED from its original, intimate premises, to a splendid new location nearby (uphill), at 1896 Hyde Street. [Sadly, many Cab Drivers & Uber Operators have not yet got the message, as we discovered - twice!]
It took us a little time to adjust to the changed surroundings : comfortable, tastefully-decorated, and certainly more spacious. But the Menu - under the watchful eyes of the same Head Chef, Anthony Florian - demonstrated the familiar flair and taste we had previously appreciated.
Over our two nights here, our "Mains" were probably more tasty than our "Starters", although the "Duck Liver Pate" & the "American Wagyu Carpaccio" were certainly adequate. My own "Pork Chop" (the first night), and a "Pork Sirloin" (night 2) were particularly impressive. M (my "Better Half") also greatly enjoyed the "Tagliatelle Bolgnese" & the "Market Fish" on different nights.
We shared a Bottle of White Wine each night. The "Merry Edwards Sauvignon Blanc" ($65) was extremely disappointing : the "Carricante, Calabretta" ($64) was absolutely superb. Bread - which is one of my own favourite meal-treats - was, sadly, limited to one "choice", was quite average, and despite prompting by us + promises from him, the Server seemed reluctant to come back with more.
"Service", overall was rather "mixed", with attentiveness fairly limited, and - in one instance - a lack of charm, particularly when M requested that she accompany this Server to the Credit Card Terminal (as experienced Travellers, we tend to be careful with Credit/Debit Cards, without wishing to reflect on the integrity or honesty of Staff). And, we must mention a multi-tasking young man, Spencer, who impressed us greatly with his courtesy and diligence, from the time we arrived at the Reception Desk.
Of course, one of the highlights of coming to "Seven Hills", is encountering the Owner, Alexis Solomou. From the first time we met him, several years ago, we have been hugely impressed by his dedicated presence, his energy, his friendly (but not intrusive) attentiveness, his clear concern to ensure everyone enjoys their visit to "Seven Hills", and more. We were delighted to meet him again (after an interval of 18 months) : our sincere thanks to Alexisi for his many kindnesses to us, as just occasional visitors to his excellent Restaurant!
And, for all of the small criticisms we have voiced here, it's fair to say that the "New Seven Hills", as it establishes itself in its new location, is, indeed, already worthy of being described as "Excellent".
We wish Alexis, Executive Chef Anthony + the evolving Team they are assembling here, all the very best - now, in these troubled times, and in the, hopefully, more settled future!
