SUGARFISH by sushi nozawa Pasadena Reviews from The Last Year
Sushi was okay, but the service was a let-down.
We waited an hour and a half for the host to sit his friends before anyone else in queue, yes we saw it. Also, the host was rude and maybe he saw the unhappiness on my face and so he decided to put us in the bar. We got the omakase and when I asked questions about the sushi, they were quick and dismissive. I asked one server if I need to dip the nigiri I was served in soy sauce since most omakases I've been at would explain how to eat what they are serving, and the server just said "you can do what you want, the world is your oyster" sarcastically, like lady the food here ain't cheap so I want to make the best of it. I thought it was inconsiderate specially that we are spending a hard earned cash at this economy. And the other server who gave us the bill, accidentally charged me for the meal for the other customer which I can forgive since he apologized. But the lady who told me that "the world is my oyster" was rude and sarcastic.

The wait was extra long on a Sunday evening and they seemed short staffed, but the food was worth it. Great deal for the quality and quantity of food- sea bream nigiri is my favorite and my partner really likes the baby lobster.

Paul was our server and he was THE BEST! He greeted us with amazing energy from the moment we sat down and made sure that we had everything we needed throughout our meal. Both my friend and I had a drink and the "TRUST ME" which was to die for! We will forsure be back!!
I took my two children to buy takeout on Father's Day.
I was told that I had to wait 30 minutes after placing the order. I understand this for a busy restaurant, but the result was disappointing. For this takeout, my two children aged 5 and 3 waited for more than an hour. When I was packing, I asked why it took so long. "Because today is Father's Day," the waiter said impatiently. There was not even a little apology. I want to say, what does Father's Day have to do with me? You told me it would take half an hour, but now it's more than an hour. Shouldn't there be an apology or expression? Nothing, very disappointed! The food itself is nothing special. The most exciting thing about the $80 food may be their dazzling paper box! What a crappy restaurant, everyone be careful!
5 for our waiter - don't recall his name but he was so
5 for our waiter - don't recall his name but he was so kind and upbeat and on his game. 5 for the food. Sugarfish is always consistent. Fish is always fresh. 4 for everything else. This is one of the smaller locations I've been to in the LA area so the wait time was longer than expected. We waited over an hour for a table for 3 - it was around 4p on a Saturday. The host wasn't the nicest. They acted like a party of 3 was such an inconvenience to them. I probably wouldn't come back to this location just because of the long wait. I'll stick to the Sugarfish location we usually go to.
My favorite location.
I've been to many sugarfish locations over the years but this location is hands down the best. The fish is always fresh and I love the blue crab hand rolls. They dim the lights for dinner so it can get a little hard to see at times according to my parents. Also, shoutout to Paul who has served me and my family many times. He always has amazing energy and takes amazing care of us with the best service.
This review is long overdue.
I come here quite often and I've been able to observe that Justin has a great work ethic. He is always refilling my drink and very attentive even when he is busy ,He is always greeting everybody with smile that comes in, he even knows their names. He's running food. He's running dirty dishes. He's serving at the bar. He's constantly working and has great customer service.I would like to see him as a manager soon, I know he would have this place tip top!
This review is for the server PAUL!! I have been to
This review is for the server PAUL!! I have been to Sugarfish 100 times but this was by far the best SUGARFISH experience our whole table has had to date. Upon greeting our table, Paul was an absolute delight! His positive energy really set the tone for our meal and we had the best time under his service. He seemed genuinely happy to take care of us and I can't help but think that's partially a reflection of the way this business is ran and management. This will be my first choice location going forward and I'll always ask for Paul! Thanks Paul!!
Their prices aren't consistent post mates to go $35+ fees ,
Their prices aren't consistent post mates to go $35+ fees , sugarfish app $40 +fees, and in person $30+ tax. And you can't order online so when you're on your lunch break you can't put the order and pay there . Huge inconvenience and why don't the prices match ? Forcing me to order from other sushi places when I work a block away
First, you have to have patience because expect to wait
First, you have to have patience because expect to wait minimum an hour for a table. The place itself is tiny and not many tables so getting a table will take time. There is three prefix meals to choose from - trust me lite: comes with edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi, salmon sushi, shrimp sushi, and Toro hand roll. This dish is the smallest since you get only one each. - Trust me: edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi, salmon sushi, toro hand roll, yellowtail sushi, hirame sushi, and crab hand roll. There is two pieces for sushi and one for hand roll - The Nozawa Trust me: edamame, tuna sashimi, albacore sushi, salmon sushi, toro hand roll, yellowtail sushi, chutoro sushi, sea bream sushi, Hirami sushi, and crab hand roll. The hand roll comes only one piece and the sushi comes in two pieces. The sushi itself is fresh, soft, and it melts in your mouth. The sashimi is absolutely delicious. There are additional rolls and hand rolls that you can order. But going with these prefix menu is great for someone who want to try a piece of everything and for those who can't decide. If you have a big appetite- this is not the place for you. The portions are beyond tiny. We ordered two of everything so that we can feel satisfied. However, it was worth it because it was delicious. This place automatically add 16% tip sooooo do not tip. To go or dine in, they automatically add this tip by the way. The service is ok, and they are on it. However it would help if they smiled? Plus I noticed that other tables who ordered after us got their food first and they need to smile more. All in all, it's great sushi place. They are fresh and delicious but I wish the portions was bigger because I can't walk out without ordering two prefix meals and additional rolls. But that's me and my friend. It's a great place to go but not in a group because of the space and wait time. It's definitely still worth a try
PLEASE STOP DELETING MY REVIEWS! I have visited this
PLEASE STOP DELETING MY REVIEWS! I have visited this location several times and enjoyed it. I've brought friends here and they too enjoyed their experience. Something about yesterday's experience makes me want to leave a review. We arrived at 4:30, and were about to be seated but asked if we could be seated at 5pm so that we could check out some of the vendors outside at a pop up shop that was shutting down at 5. Sure! No problem! We return at exactly 5 to find 6 parties waiting. Not a problem until we find out, no one actually put our name on the list to be seated at 5. The guy not in black in a very condescending tone said they don't take reservations and it's up to us if we wanted to be seated. We had driven 30 minutes to get here because we really like this place and we had an out of town guest to whom we'd promised sushi so, we didn't have much of a choice. We sat and waited for 30 minutes before being seated. No apology for the miscommunication. Our server was wonderful except we had to keep asking about a la carte items, some which never came. The restrooms definitely needed attention . The staff are always very friendly and helpful, the food is always fresh, but that guy in the front (supervisor or something, not dressed in black) really started our dining experience on a sour note. Sugar fish have many other locations, I just won't be coming back to this one. And clean your restrooms! Ew!
Everything about SugarFish exceeds expectation! The quality
Everything about SugarFish exceeds expectation! The quality of the sushi is amazing! The presentation is simple yet beautiful. The flavor combinations are literally out of this world!! Service is exactly what you would find in a sushi bar in Japan... Friendly and very attentive, but definitely not in your face bothering you. The atmosphere is modern chic. With a light and airy feel. Even when the restaurant is packed, it doesn't feel like ur jammed in there. Dine-in experience is always wonderful. Take-Out is always correct, and beautifully collected or delivered. Thank you SugarFish!!!
Sugarfish is always a delightful experience.
The staff members were friendly. Shout out to Peter! The food was fresh and delicious. Never disappointed at any of their locations.
We have been going to SUGARFISH for some time now at
We have been going to SUGARFISH for some time now at multiple locations. The Pasadena location feels a little smaller than other locations and it usually has a wait unless you go during the off hours. The reason why we keep coming back - the food is consistent and it's usually good. It's pretty traditional in that there's not too much done with the sushi. It may not be the best sushi we've had, but it is good and we know what we are getting every time. We are usually more than satisfied with our meals. We often get one of the Trust Me Sets or my favorite - the "Don't Think, Just Eat' set. We just enjoy to not think about what we want too much and just enjoy the food. Every now and then, we'll order some of the specials so it's always worth a look to see what they have for that day. Something that I think of that's signature to SUGARFISH is that they use warm rice with their sushi and rolls. It's different and we do enjoy the warm rice at their establishments, though their may be varying opinions on rice temperature in sushi. We haven't had any bad experiences here at SUGARFISH - Pasadena so we will continue to come back.
This is hands down my favorite luxury sushi spot.
This is not like your typical AYCE quality sushi. This is worlds above it. We did the "Don't Think, Just Eat, Trust Me" and it was phenomenal. This actually filled us up too, so make sure to visit moderately hungry. There is no advance reservation, so make sure to come and get your spot. The service is very welcoming and professional. The mood and lighting was also very intimate, loved the ambiance.
Just plain good food, very friendly people.
We have been there many times and is always a wonderful dinner.
Food delicious Great service: friendly and professional
Food delicious Great service: friendly and professional Ambiance: nice Sushi melts in your mouth. Great taste. Could have had more but was pretty on the pricy side.
Came here on my first night in Pasadena visiting my sister.
This is one of her favorite places. We decided to go earlier-5pm thinking we wouldn't have to wait long. We were wrong. We ended up waiting 2 hours, which was very long especially having flown in that day from the East coast. Thankfully, there was seating outside to wait and the weather was gorgeous. My niece insisted it is worth the wait. I have to say, our meal was delicious and fresh! I had the The Nozawa Trust Me. They ran out of Hirame sushi and substituted it with scallop sushi which was delicious-the ponzu sauce was amazing. All of the fish was super fresh and delicious. I was satisfied after my meal, although I did have 2 of my mom's sushi pieces as well. The service was excellent, friendly and attentive. Thank you!
This was my first time at sugarfish.
The server was so nice and polite throughout the time. I got the Nozawa trust me and it was delicious, and if you're hungry, it'll definitely fill you up! One thing that kind of caught me off guard was that the rice was really warm. Never had warm rice since...the fish is raw lol Also the music was realllly loud and I could barely hear what the server and the other person I was here with say.
Yum great sushi spot in Pasadena and great service overall.
Would highly recommended this to friends and family.

Came with a party of 2 on a Monday evening and we were seated right away. I decided to go with the Trust Me Lite ($25) as I have a smaller appetite, and it ended up being the perfect amount of food! The Trust Me Lite came with edamame, tuna sashimi, 4 nigiri (albacore, sesame topped salmon, yellowtail, shrimp), and a toro (fatty tuna) hand roll. My favorites would have to be the albacore and yellowtail nigiri. The tables are a bit close together, as I'm guessing they don't expect guests to stay for extended periods of time, but I enjoyed the overall ambiance & experience. I believe they validate parking, but we decided to just park in the lot behind Mendocino Farms down the street. Would recommend coming here if you enjoy sushi and are looking for a slight splurge!
Sugarfish is consistent in their food, consistent in their
Sugarfish is consistent in their food, consistent in their service, and top notch for a sushi chain. Once the management stabilised at this location things got good. Getting a table is difficult during lunch or dinner time. Prepare for an hour wait, no reservations, all sugarfish seating policies are rather stringent.
Sugarfish operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so
Sugarfish operates on a first-come, first-served basis, so join the waitlist immediately and occupy yourself by walking around the area or with a drink while waiting. It took us about 2 hours on a Saturday night. The restaurant's intimate setting can only accommodate around 10 parties at a time, making it less ideal for larger groups. We opted for the Trust Me set menu. Highlights were the Tuna Sashimi, Salmon Sushi, and Toro Handroll. While the rice tended to fall apart easily, possibly due to insufficient rice vinegar or inadequate resting time after cooking, the sashimi quality was exceptional. It had a wonderfully buttery texture, complemented by the light ponzu sauce and chive garnish. There is a bathroom available, but its cleanliness doesn't quite match the restaurant's otherwise nice ambiance. Additionally, the dim, intimate lighting may not be ideal for capturing photos.
Best sushi I have ever had & Paul gave us the best service
Best sushi I have ever had & Paul gave us the best service we have received in a very long time. He was very attentive and had a great time. My parents went back 2 days later they had such a great experience. Thank you, Paul! Even though they don't take reservations, the wait is never that long! Totally worth the wait every time!
I had a great time dining at the sunset blvd location, so I
I had a great time dining at the sunset blvd location, so I expected my experience here to be on par. While the fish was still high quality, the rice and service were below average. I usually order the Trust Me, which is a perfect amount to fill me up. The servers brought out our orders all at once, unlike other locations which brings it out piece-by-piece to ensure quality and freshness. So by the time I got to the blue crab hand roll (which is always saved for last), the seaweed wrap was already soggy. The rice here is also mushy and fell apart into little bits in the hand roll and nigiri. That was disappointing since Sugarfish is known for their rice. Servers here are also not as attentive compared to Sugarfish on sunset. I'll save my time and visit other locations next time.
I almost never give 5 stars but HOLY SASHIMI!!!! This place
I almost never give 5 stars but HOLY SASHIMI!!!! This place was amazing! The fish essentially melts in your mouth! This sets raw fish on a whole new level for me. This place has a set menu that comes with three options: 1. Trust me, 2. NOZAWA trust me, and 3. Trust me lite, 4. Don't think, just eat trust me Each one is different prices and various sizes that you can choose based on your hunger level and budget. The prices here were not as bad as I expected! So it makes for an amazing experience that won't exactly break the budget. For food, I got the NOZAWA trust me, which was AMAZING! They actually subed one of the rolls with a scallop roll and it was my favorite! However, everything was amazing and to die for. Then for drinks I tried the Nigori sake, which came in a bottle! And of course the classic Sapporo beer! Both were delicious! I'm addicted to this place now! 10/10 recommend giving it a try
Husband picked up the best sushi for me after giving birth.
By the time it got to the hospital, it was just as delicious as I remembered. Everything was so yummy and fresh and I love that they have such beautiful presentation. Every bite was perfectly executed. No fishy taste, quality is amazing, and I can't wait to dine in again.
I never ate fish before I came to Sugarfish Pasadena! First
I never ate fish before I came to Sugarfish Pasadena! First of all, ask for Paul as your server if he is working. He is so kind and attentive and honestly has the best personality. The food here is just so top-notch. The hirame is my absolute favorite, although it does sell out! The restaurant is small and always has a wait, but it's cozy and so worth it for the delicious food.
Generally I only eat cooked sushi but I decided to be
Generally I only eat cooked sushi but I decided to be adventurous and try raw. My husband and I came here with friends to get some true authentic sushi that's also high quality. The ambiance was great, very intimate setting with low lights. Our waiter was super nice and did a great job explaining the menu. We ended up getting 2 orders of the "Trust me" so I couldn't even tell you what we had. Overall I'll say I was glad I tried it! Is raw sushi for me, probably not lol
I was introduced to this place for their iconic takeout
I was introduced to this place for their iconic takeout boxes from people I watch on YouTube/other various social media. I was half expecting the food to not be great, I guess I am convinced that when it comes to restaurants like SUGARFISH, food taste usually takes a tumble at the cost of being posh/chic. I was wrong, not only was this place fairly swanky and appealing, the food tasted fantastic as well! It was so good, it actually made some fish I tend to not prefer delicious (sea bream, not a big fan of it previously, but I am now if any place will prepare it the way SUGARFISH does). The box was excellent, and lovely to look at while I ate. I would've saved it and taken it back with me on the plane if I had enough luggage room. I was originally going to pick this up and eat it back in bed in my hotel room while I watched YouTube, but there's a nice little center area outside of this establishment to enjoy this meal, and it was too inviting and I was too hungry to wait to drive back. I kind of prefer it instead of dining in. The restaurant itself is on the slightly smaller side, and seemed chaotic from how packed it was. Multiple families with tons of kids were there, did not seem like it was worth it at that specific moment to dine in. I'd love to visit again, and this time I will try to bring it back into the hotel room and eat it in bed while watching YouTube!
