An eexceptional restaurant
A small restaurant above the pub. Excellent food, in a pleasant, quiet atmosphere and friendly staff. Menu changes daily, with some interesting dishes.

Superb lunch and afternoon in The French House. Excellent sรฉlection of starters and main courses accompanied by exquisite aperitifs and digestifs. Plumb brandy was exhilarating. All delightfully served by Suzanne and Maxi. Honoured by Neilโs personal attention and special mention for chef Paul who guided us through each of our gastronomic selections. An establishment steeped in history and an historic day for us. Thanks so much guys.

Truly excellent cooking married with an efficient and effortlessly competent front of house. To drink, we had aperitifs and a reasonably priced bottle of Pomerol, followed by a couple of glasses of Sauternes. To eat, my wife had a roast scallop (โdelicious!โ) and I had a slab of ox tongue with cress and horseradish which is possibly the most delicious way Iโve had this cooked: quite dense meat, really beefy flavour and utterly delicious. For mains, we had a spatchcocked quail and pork cheeks - both really well cooked. For pudding, we had a Paris-Brest. The service was attentive without being intrusive. All reasonably priced and a memorable dinner well worth the effort of waiting for a table (owing to its popularity, we had to book some time in advance) in a small, simple dining room. Fantastic!
Be the first to Replyexpensive ribeye and it was quite stringy, so rather glad we shared!
Bit of a curates egg this place but still love it, very expensive ribeye not of the best quality so cant understand the price, fish also way over ยฃ40 so we have decided to share plates from now on as we have history here

Fantastic food with impeccable service. Ghenta & Leo were amazing, perfect blend of funny, friendly & professional. Neil brought out the madeleines which freshly baked were one of the best desserts either of us have ever had. We are already planning our next visit, canโt wait!
Be the first to ReplySuperb, memorable meal and not at rip-off prices
Superb. French cuisine at its very best. Subtle, complex, well-balanced flavours. Cannot recall a meal in London as good as this in twenty years. La Trompette at its best, maybe. Neil Borthwick is a very fine chef (and on a cold, dark Wednesday evening was in the kitchen not leaving it to others). Warm welcome from cheery, knowledgeable staff who take great pride in the sheer quality of what they are serving. I doubt an interior designer has been near, but who cares? The napery is spotless and the food memorable (and not ridiculously pricey). Delicious chicory-based salad (and I find salads boring usually) and a gorgeous duck breast (for two) linger in the memory.
Be the first to ReplyNever again!
I have been to this popular but small Soho restaurant a number of times in recent years but today's visit has made me vow never to go there again. The food was good the wine was quaffable but expensive at ยฃ45 a bottle. However we were asked to move tables after our main course to let a threesome sit down and offered another table plus a glass of Calvados each as a sweetener. We agreed and were still eating our pudding when the waitress arrived with the bill and asked us to pay up and leave (nicely) as a couple were waiting by the door for our table!! We remonstrated that we had accommodated their needs and had not finished eating yet but another waitress accused us of rudeness by objecting to their demands!! We had exceeded their two hour limit by 15 minutes but all restaurants in London have this limit and yet I have never in 30 years been asked to leave my table especially in such circumstances. Life is too short to be harassed by rude waiting staff especially when you are paying ยฃ170 for two including tip (yes we did leave a tip, God knows why!!)
Be the first to ReplyDon't keep this one a secret!
Please keep this place a secret so I can get a table next time I need one! And that will be very soon! This spot is that very rare thing in London these days - unassuming, skilled and lovely staff, proper plates of food not dinky sharing rip-offs! Short and special menu, unashamedly serving meat and of course other things. Magret was stunning and the American football of luscious chocolate mousse restarted my stalled relationship with chocolate mousse! Oops. Forgot the perfect Irish rock oysters! Thank You Neil and staff! Rx

Upon many recommendations, it was finally time to try out the upstairs restaurant at this great pub. It did not disappoint!
Be the first to ReplyEnjoyed our first visit to an iconic eaterie
First visit to the French House and enjoyed it immensely. Cosy dining room, friendly, knowledgeable and effective service, thankfully short and reasonably priced wine list, classical French food, cooked really nicely. We had scallops, goats cheese curd with a baked garlic on sourdough and shared the duck with fois gras with aligot and greens. Followed be cheese and crumble supported by Poire William, Port and coffee. Would have been a 5 but the meat main course had sold out (at 6.30) so the only choice we has was both having monkfish or the shared duck (at a rather steep ยฃ95).

This place is amazing. The food was out of this world absolutely delicious and so fresh. The atmosphere was calm and relaxing and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. They all made us feel extra special and made the whole experience even better than expected. Love the handwritten menu showing how fresh the food is with a daily changing menu. The cods cheeks were outstanding and the madelines divine. Can't wait to go again. Thank you all the staff for making it a joint birthday meal to remember forever.
Be the first to ReplyWonderful atmospheric restaurant
The French House is a superb pub with a lovely bohemian atmosphere. No proper beer, just keg beer in half pints. But no one goes to the French House to drink beer. If you want a pint first go to the Coach and Horses round the corner, and, if you are lucky, you might be entertained by Norman Balon on one of his visits. The French House is spirits and wine. We had a gin & tonic first then went upstairs for lunch. It's a lovely, small dining room with friendly, knowledgeable staff. The handwritten menu has a French feel, obviously, with a list of starters and two steaks. Specials are on a board with a couple of fish options and another meat one. The menus vary by the day. The quality of the food is good and so is the presentation. The goat curd starter was excellent and so was the cuttlefish. We went back downstairs to the bar for a liqueur and to savour the atmosphere. I have been to the pub many times and it never changes, thank goodness. It was my first visit to the restaurant. We will definitely be back.
Be the first to ReplyDining upstairs.
Good to see that upstairs has reverted to being a white cloth dining room. Busy midweek night. And downstairs bustles as ever.
Be the first to ReplyAlways enjoyable
Lunch at the French House has become something of an annual tradition for us. Each year we visit London at Christmas and we always end up having a drinker two in the bar, followed by lunch upstairs. The food is always good but the service shines, the waitstaff is friendly and are always fun characters. It reminds me of a bygone time 40-50 years ago when Soho was my favorite part of London. Please don't change, you're the last of a dying breed in Soho!

Always wanted to visit but never have. A late Friday afternoon and we called in for a drink. very bust but very friendly with a wonderful old world atmosphere! No fuss, no shabby sheik, just a genuine old world pub. Perfect!

Had a fantastic visit to this legendary bar, it was very busy but we managed to squeeze in and order drinks. Friendly atmosphere and very sociable, ended up staying for quite a while enjoying the wine and chatting to other customers. Around great experience!
Be the first to ReplyFantastic place for a great lunch
A landmark location in Soho. So was delighted to have a really lovely lunch. The restaurant is charming and cosy. Staff get 10 out of 10 for service. And the food was really excellent. Strongly recommend. And so nice to see such a famous venue produce such great food and service

Visited for drinks and sat at the window to watch the Soho world go by. The kitchen was not open so unable to try the oysters. Friendly staff and service.
Be the first to ReplySweetest staff
We were served by Leo and Jazz last week, the food as always was brilliant and so was the service. We had very nice little chats with Leo - being sat next to the bar, he saw me steal a little food off my fiancรฉeโs plate and said, ha, even i saw that. I said oh Iโve earned the right to after 7 years, actually 7 years today. We were there for an anniversary meal. When we ordered dessert, Jazz and Leo made sure to add a candle to our dessert and honestly it was such a sweet gesture. Itโs not our first visit and definitely will not be our last, canโt recommend the French house more.
Be the first to ReplyGreat pub horrible bar staff
Lovely pub but really let down but tbe atrociously rude staff.....There was one red haired barmaid who was so rude to my wife I had to stop my other half shouting her down. The other stout blonde barstaf looks at you like like they smelt someting bad. Atrocious service.
Be the first to Replylunch on the first floor
the downstairs bar is a famous hotspot, specially after 5pm we had lunch at the first floor and ll was very good but we still talking about the fantastic duck pate , that was high quality
Be the first to ReplyWonderfully unique
What is there to be said about The French the hasn't been said already? A wonderful, unique pub with a fabled past and an atmosphere all of its own. A Soho institution in a changing neighbourhood. Tiny, busy, buzzing, it's wonderful. There a few pleasures in life greater than sitting in the window or standing outside with a drink on a summer evening, watching Soho life in all its glory. It's not for everyone - it has quirks and foibles (no pints- just halves, no mobile phones to be used) and if your idea of a good pub is endless Stella and football on the TV then it isn't for you. But if you like the idea of a pub like no other which has been frequented by legends of stage, screen, politics and more, then you'll love it. Pay a visit, you won't regret it and you'll be back.
Be the first to ReplyFirst stop in London!
Return visit from Australia after Covid. We stayed nearby London Piccadilly West End, about 100 metres from "The French". After checking, went straight to the French House pub / wine bar / restaurant. Greeted warmly by Hilary behind the bar, one lovely lady. Asked if we wanted to eat in the restaurant upstairs, as they had one vacancy for lunch. We accepted and had a wonderful lunch. My wife opted for the "special of the day" Steak and frites. Perfectly cooked and loved it. Service was friendly, attentive and pleasant. Kitty our attentive wait staff (studying art) was also stunningly beautiful with a personality to match. Back to the bar...fo several days. A great venue for all occasions...our first and last stop in London.

I wanted a table for 8pm for a family group. The restaurant could only do 8.30pm (understandable), but insisted I provide my credit card details and confirm immediately so as not to lose the booking. Having jumped through these hoops, and been reminded to confirm the day before (which I did) we looked forward to our dinner. More fools us. We arrived early, at 8.20pm. There was a table for 4 ready, but the hatchet-faced waitress told us they were not ready so please could we come back at 8.30pm. I took our family group (including two ladies of 80) for a walk, and back we came at 8.3opm. The restaurant had given the available table of 4 to three girls, and we were told that our table was "not yet ready" - we should have a drink in the (absolutely rammed) pub downstairs. I asked how long our table would be, and was told that they had not yet ordered their desserts. So, assuming they wanted coffee, digestifs we could have been waiting for an hour or more. At no point did anyone say how sorry they were, or come up with some kind of solution - a single bar stool was pointed out for one of the old ladies. After 15 minutes I told the waitress I wanted to cancel the reservation, as I needed to get the old ladies some dinner - again, no apology. She said "You want to cancel your reservation? Right - fair enough" - her lack of surprise suggests this happens all the time. What a shame - I used to love the French House. But if they insist on making people dine late, jump through endless hoops for a table and then not provide it, they don't deserve my custom, and they won't be getting it again. It's testament to how frustrating it was that it has moved me to post this as my first ever review on Tripadvisor. We went to a well-known chain of restaurants instead - they could not have been kinder and more helpful.
Be the first to ReplyNeil Borthwick Reigns Supreme at The French!
On the first flying visit to London in three years, it was wonderful to find Neil Borthwick, the Scots Master Chef, still producing wonderful gourmet dishes in the little The French House Dining Room. We were lucky to get a table since yet another celebrity TV chef was also enjoying himself here and that says a lot about the great kitchen and excellent service. Enjoyed the large oysters followed by calves brains plus truly evil (ie delicious) desserts and his famous Madelaines. Good to see Neil still has his enormous Pork Chop on the excellent menu. Also delightful to be hosted again by Lesley Lewis in the bar downstairs and enjoy her wine selection.
