We arrived at 8pm, and were greeted with confusion, as it appeared our table had been given away. We were given no explanation and kept waiting at the door, until several minutes later room was found for us in the (half empty) restaurant. Our party of five ordered two starters and two snacks. At 8:50, we were presented with a cold bowl of soup, cold croquettas, bread, and olives. I sent the soup back, but when it did eventually return, it turned out to be totally lacking flavour. Even some salt and pepper would have improved it. The croquettas were eaten as by that point everyone was very hungry. The restaurant looked about half full, and I cannot understand (nor was any explanation offered for) the long delays. It seemed at times like a sheer lack of interest - the table next to us were left with dessert menus for about 20 minutes before anyone bothered to take their order, despite the waiter loitering around next to the till and then going to set places at an empty table, presumably for lunch tomorrow. We then waited another 30 minutes for our main courses to arrive. Astonishingly, the fish stew was again cold. I was so frustrated by that point that I just asked for it to be taken away. I didn’t want it reheated, I just wanted to get away as soon as possible by that point. Four of the five members of our party reported their meal was cold too. The sides of rice were cold, and the waiter said this could not be the case because he had “checked them downstairs.” He became quite aggressive, and whilst the other members of my party said they would eat theirs cold (it was past 9:30 and we were very hungry!), he took the rice sides away. He came back later, and without saying a word - his hands visibly shaking with apparent fury - he put the rice dishes back on the table, and walked away without any kind of apology or explanation. We asked for the bill as it was now 9:50pm and we were keen to get away as quickly as possible. The fact that they had the *cheek* to include a 12.5% service charge on the bill was astonishing. They had removed the fish stew I sent back and did not eat, and the two sides of rice. That was it. We immediately asked for the service charge to be removed, and were told by the waiter that the manager was needed to make adjustments. He went to get him, and when he arrived, it turned out he was the aggressive waiter from earlier. We told him about our awful experience. He looked entirely uninterested, and said he would remove the service charge. My colleague then asked if that was all he was going to remove given our experience. He said that was all he could do. When asked why, he claimed he was “a supervisor, not a manager” (a distinction I confess I remain rather puzzled by), and only a manager could do that. I asked him to get the manager, but he claimed the manager had “gone”. He then said he could take off the drinks (how this was possible for a mere “supervisor” we can only guess), and went away apparently to do this. When he returned, his manner was very different. He apologised that our evening had been so poor, and I said that “all he could do” was put it “on the house”, which I understood to mean the bill for the evening. He put a folded bill down on the table though, and when we looked at it, the only change was that some beers had been removed - everything else, including two glasses wine and a mocktail, was still there. I was confused and asked the waiter to check with the manager, as I had understood him to say the meal was on the house but the bill implied not. We heard what sounded like a heated argument next door in the room with the bar, and after several minutes the waiter returned and said the bill was what we still had to pay. I was then even more confused and asked why the drinks were still on there if he had gone away in the first place to take the drinks off. He said the drinks were not on the bill. I pointed out that the wine and mocktail was still there. He then announced in a tone of irritation that *some* drinks had been taken off and that was all they could do. At this point everyone was tired, I was hungry, and nobody could be bothered continuing this utterly ridiculous conversation, so we paid it and left. As I stood outside waiting on the rest of the party, the other waiter stood drying a glass, glowering at me. Such a shame - I was planning on going back at the weekend with a friend. I most assuredly will not be doing that now. Another member of our party actually said he had booked a meal with a friend later there in the week too - he has now cancelled. I have never had an experience like this. The manager (err sorry, “supervisor”) was so aggressive, unpleasant, and totally unapologetic. The other waiters were totally unconcerned and did not care. If you’re in Covent Garden and want somewhere nice to eat, I can recommend Oystermen instead. I went recently, and the service and food were *outstanding*. Needless to say, I will certainly not be going near Volta again.
