How often is the most popular restaurant in a city on Yelp an Indian restaurant?
From 2011 to 2015 I worked one mile from here on Shoreline blvd on the other side of the freeway, but only came here once, as next door Google and Linkedin campuses made the place almost inaccessible during rush hour.
Pandemic comes and turns everything upside down. All those Google and Linkedin workers are working from home, and the campuses vacant.
We come here on a Saturday arriving at 11:35am, 5 minutes after they open, and already 2 of the 3 two person outside tables under two sun umbrellas are occupied -they apparently open at 11am.
Gone are the days when up to 18 people could dine on 9 tables indoors, as no indoor dining, even with other restaurants nearby opening up for indoor dining.
I order the $12.34 Chicken Tikka Masala, and the wife the $12.34 Madras Chicken Curry Meal, both $1 more than listed on the window menu.
Service is on the slow side, with it taking 15 minutes for our meals to arrive in TV dinner shaped paper clam shells for the rice and chutney, and chicken in sturdy 6" plastic saucers 1" high. Napkin and single plastic spoon-fork bundled up in plastic bag, with napkin, the smallest I've ever seen, the size of a sheet of toilet paper!
The 9 oz of Chicken Tikka Masala are boneless pieces of lightly charred chicken in a tomato cream curry. The chicken is cooked to perfection, not burnt, with a smoky flavoring. One of the best CTMs I've tasted. Pricey for the 4 oz of chicken, as most of the dish is sauce.
The Madras Chicken Curry are boneless pieces of chicken in a tomato cream curry with Madras spices added. Abundant amounts of sliced carrots and potato. More spicy than the Chicken Tikka Masala, but not to the point of needing milk to drown it down.
The meals come with the main dish, basmati rice, chutney and Daal(lentil). Naan, once standard before the pandemic, will cost $1.50 more.
It's definitely easier to come here during the pandemic, as no crowds of nearby Google nor Linkedin employees to contend with.
However, the prices have gone up, and they've cut corners in the meals by charging you extra for the Naan. The chicken dishes are exceptional, but the meals are not as good a value as before the pandemic.
And if you come for outside dining at lunch during the summer, eat quickly or get cooked under the 2 inadequate sun umbrellas for 3 tables.
